Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty)

Heavy upper lids and puffy lower lids can make you look tired even when you are rested. Blepharoplasty restores an open, fresh look to the eyes.

In short

Blepharoplasty removes excess skin and fat from the upper and lower eyelids. The incisions lie in natural skin creases, so scars fade within 6–8 weeks. It takes 1–2 hours under local anaesthesia with sedation or general anaesthesia. Bruising usually settles about a week after the stitches are removed.

What does eyelid surgery correct?

  • Excess, hooded upper eyelid skin
  • Puffy bags under the eyes
  • Hollows between the lower lid and cheek
  • A tired appearance; in severe cases, upper lid skin that limits the field of vision

How is it performed?

In the upper lid, excess skin and fat are removed through an incision in the natural crease. In the lower lid, fat bags are removed or redistributed into the hollow through an incision just below the lashes or inside the lid.

Recovery

Cold compresses help in the first 48 hours. Stitches are removed on day 5–7. Most people return to work after about 10 days. Contact lenses can usually be worn again after two weeks.
