In short
Septorhinoplasty combines rhinoplasty with correction of a deviated nasal septum and, if needed, enlarged turbinates. About 80% of people have a septum that is not perfectly straight, but only those with symptoms need treatment. It is done under general anaesthesia in 2–3 hours; internal healing takes 2–6 weeks.

What is a deviated septum?
The septum is the wall of cartilage and bone that divides the nose into two passages. When it bends to one side it can block airflow, cause snoring, mouth breathing, recurrent sinusitis and headaches.
Symptoms
- Difficulty breathing through one or both sides
- Snoring and dry mouth on waking
- Frequent sinus infections
- Nosebleeds
- Using nasal sprays regularly
How is it performed?
The bent parts of the septum are straightened or removed while a supporting framework is preserved. Enlarged turbinates are reduced. In the same operation the external nose is reshaped. Removed septal cartilage can be used as grafts.
Aftercare
Soft internal splints are usually removed on the second day. Saline rinses keep the nose clean. Blowing the nose forcefully is avoided for two weeks.
Frequently asked questions
Will septum surgery change the shape of my nose?
Septoplasty alone does not change the outside of the nose. In septorhinoplasty the shape is changed deliberately.
Can medication fix a deviated septum?
No. Sprays relieve symptoms temporarily but do not straighten the septum.
Will septorhinoplasty stop my snoring?
If snoring is caused by nasal obstruction it often improves. Other causes need separate evaluation.
When does sense of smell return?
It improves after the splints are removed and normalises over a few weeks as internal swelling settles.
How long before I can exercise?
Light walking from the first week, strenuous exercise after 4–6 weeks, contact sports after 3 months.
How often is repeat surgery needed?
Repeat surgery is needed in fewer than 2% of cases.
Is there a lot of bleeding?
Bleeding is usually limited to light oozing in the first day or two.
Is there an age limit?
Surgery is usually done after nasal growth is complete, around 17–18 years.
How long should I stay in Ankara?
About 7–10 days.
Do I need a CT scan?
A scan may be requested if you have sinus symptoms or complex obstruction.
