Facelift

A rested, natural-looking face rather than a tight one. A facelift repositions the deeper tissues of the face and neck and removes excess skin.

In short

In a facelift, incisions starting in the hairline and running in front of and behind the ear are used to lift sagging skin and the underlying tissues (SMAS) of the face and neck, and excess skin is removed. It takes 2–4 hours under general anaesthesia or local anaesthesia with sedation. Swelling and bruising settle in 1–2 weeks; scars are largely hidden in the hair and natural creases.

Before a facelift

Your skin quality, bone structure, volume loss and neck are assessed. Blood thinners and some supplements are stopped 10 days before surgery, and smokers must stop smoking, as smoking increases the risk of wound problems.

How is a facelift performed?

The deeper muscle–fascia layer (SMAS) is lifted and fixed, which gives a longer-lasting and more natural result than pulling the skin alone. Excess skin is then removed and closed without tension. A neck lift and fat grafting are often combined.

Recovery

  • A light dressing is worn for the first day or two.
  • Swelling and bruising settle in 1–2 weeks.
  • Temporary numbness around the cheeks and ears is common.
  • Most people return to social life after 2–3 weeks.

How long does a facelift last?

Results typically last 8–12 years. The face continues to age, but you will continue to look younger than you would have without surgery.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best age for a facelift?

There is no fixed age; it depends on the degree of sagging. Most patients are between 45 and 65.

Will I look 'pulled'?

Lifting the deeper tissues and closing the skin without tension avoids a tight, artificial look.

Where are the scars?

In the temple hairline, in front of and behind the ear and in the hairline behind the ear.

Is a neck lift included?

Neck sagging is usually corrected in the same operation.

What is a mini facelift?

A limited facelift through shorter incisions for mild sagging.

Can fillers or threads replace a facelift?

They help with volume or very mild laxity temporarily but cannot remove excess skin.

How long should I stay in Ankara?

About 10–14 days.

Is there numbness after a facelift?

Temporary numbness is common and improves over months.

Can eyelid surgery be done at the same time?

Yes. Facelift is frequently combined with eyelid surgery and fat grafting.

When can I colour my hair?

Usually after 4–6 weeks.
